Before you pick one

Three rules that apply to every trip

  • Leave from the right station. High-speed trains to Hangzhou, Shanghai and Jinhua leave from Yiwu Railway Station (义乌站), north-west of town — the metro reaches it since July 2026, a taxi from the market is about ¥35–61 by our estimate. Hengdian and Fotang are not train trips: metro and road respectively.
  • Eat before you go, or carry it. For the six detailed trips below, the Hangzhou section points to halal-search areas; confirm a particular restaurant before travel. We have not verified halal kitchens in Fotang, Shuanglin, Hengdian, Jinhua or Wuzhen, or in the newly added destinations. A Lanzhou noodle counter and a 清真 sign are starting points for a check, not our verification. A packed lunch from Exotic Street (Sinbad’s bread and grill travel well) or a Yemeni breakfast before the train solves it.
  • Book the return. Weekend and holiday trains sell out; visitors report booking the Hangzhou return on 12306 or Trip.com the night before. Metro and buses need no booking.
1 · 40 min south

Fotang Ancient Town (佛堂古镇)

How: taxi or Didi from the market (23.5 km · ~51 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22); a visitor in December 2025 paid about ¥50 for roughly 30 minutes. Buses run from the market bus centre but take twice as long. Cost: the old town is free; meter formula ~¥79; most drivers quote a flat price for this distance — agree it before leaving. Hours to allow: three to four, ideally arriving after 15:00 so you get the river wharf, the moving bridge and the lanterns coming on.

What it is: Yiwu’s old river port on the Yiwu River — restored merchant courtyards, the old street, Puchuan water street and a Qing-era commercial town that predates the market by two centuries. It is where locals take visiting family. Halal: nothing certified in the old town itself; visitors mention a Lanzhou noodle shop near the entrance (check the sign) and we have not verified any kitchen there. Eat a late Exotic Street lunch first, or bring bread and fruit. Full guide with the sights and the driver card: Fotang Ancient Town.

2 · ~44 min by metro

Hengdian World Studios (横店影视城)

How: the Jinhua–Yiwu–Dongyang intercity metro east to Hengdian — visitors put the ride at about 44 minutes from central Yiwu; from the International Trade City stop it is one line with no change. By road it is 32.2 km · ~62 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22. Cost: metro ¥2 for 8 km then ¥1 per 4 km, so roughly ¥8–10 each way on the operator’s formula; the studio parks sell individual and combined tickets (prices change by season — check the official site or Trip.com the day before). Hours to allow: a full day for two parks; half a day for the Qin Palace alone.

What it is: the largest film-set complex in the world — a full-scale Forbidden City, a Qin dynasty palace, a Ming–Qing street — where Chinese period dramas are shot; you will walk past costumed extras. One visitor post is titled “lesson learned: take the metro” after a slow shared-ride. Halal: inside the parks, no; the Hengdian town has Lanzhou noodle shops (Hui-run by tradition, check the sign). Carry lunch. Step-by-step route: Yiwu → Hengdian.

3 · pair with Fotang

Shuanglin Temple & scenic area (双林寺 · 双林风景区)

How: it sits in the hills just south of Fotang town, so combine the two: taxi from the market to Fotang (23.5 km · ~51 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22), then a 10-minute local taxi or Didi up to the temple gate; ask the driver for 双林寺 (Shuānglín Sì). Cost: the scenic area charges a modest entrance fee that varies with season — we have not paid it ourselves yet, so ask at the gate; budget a Fotang-plus-hill taxi day at ¥150–250 all in. Hours to allow: two to three for the temple and the hill walk, added to a Fotang afternoon.

What it is: one of Zhejiang’s oldest Buddhist sites, founded in the 6th century by the lay Buddhist Fu Dashi (傅大士), a local figure Yiwu is proud of; the modern temple is a rebuild, the setting — pines, a reservoir, the ridge above the river valley — is the reason to go. Quiet on weekdays. Halal: none; vegetarian temple food may be on offer on festival days but is not halal-certified. This is a bring-your-own-lunch trip.

4 · 20–30 min by train

Jinhua (金华) — old town, ham and quiet

How: high-speed train from Yiwu Railway Station to Jinhua or Jinhua South, about 20–30 minutes, frequent; or the intercity metro west (slower, cheaper, no booking). By road it is 55.6 km · ~77 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22. Cost: train fares are shown on 12306 / Trip.com at booking — a short second-class hop; metro on the operator’s formula tops out at ¥17 for the whole line. Hours to allow: half a day is enough for Guzicheng (古子城) old town and the riverside; a full day if you add the Twin Dragon caves (双龙洞) in the hills north of the city.

What it is: the prefecture capital that Yiwu belongs to — older, slower, with a restored old town, the Taiping Rebellion-era Shizhai residence and the famous dry-cured Jinhua ham (not halal: it is pork). Halal: Jinhua has a Hui community and Lanzhou / Xinjiang restaurants around the railway station and the university district; we have not verified any yet, so use the 30-second check on our Lanzhou noodle explainer before ordering.

5 · ~1 h by train

Hangzhou · West Lake (杭州西湖)

How: high-speed train from Yiwu Railway Station to Hangzhou East (杭州东) or Hangzhou West — visitors report about 40 minutes from Hangzhou West and up to 70 from Hangzhou East, with departures every few minutes at peak; then Hangzhou metro line 1 to Longxiangqiao (龙翔桥) for the lake. If driving, check current parking and access arrangements around your chosen lakeside destination; by road it is 134.5 km · ~119 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22. Cost: second-class rail fares are shown at booking on 12306 / Trip.com; the lake itself is free, the boat and the Leifeng Pagoda are ticketed. Hours to allow: a full day — first train out, last train back; the 10 km lakeside loop is a walk or a shared bike.

What it is: China’s most famous lake, the causeways, the tea hills at Longjing, the old Hefang street. Halal: search around Hangzhou’s Hui quarter and Xinjiang / Lanzhou restaurant areas; confirm the particular restaurant before travelling. Fenghuang Mosque is on Zhongshan Middle Road (凤凰寺, one of China’s oldest); ask your hotel or search 清真 in Amap and use the four-tier check. Yiwu traders who make this trip usually book a Friday-off and pray Jummah at Fenghuang Mosque.

6 · ~2.5 h — a long day

Wuzhen water town (乌镇)

How: high-speed train Yiwu → Tongxiang (桐乡, about 1–1.5 h, not every train stops), then bus K282 or a taxi (about 30 min) to the Wuzhen scenic area; or a hired car door to door — 194.9 km · ~163 min by road Amap routing, 2026-09-22. Cost: rail fare on 12306 at booking; the West Scenic Zone (西栅) ticket is the expensive part and changes by season; a hired car for the day is quoted flat by Yiwu drivers — agree it in writing. Hours to allow: leave by 07:30, back after 21:00; overnight in Wuzhen is the better plan.

What it is: the best-restored of the Jiangnan canal towns — stone bridges, black-tiled houses over the water, night lighting — and the venue of the World Internet Conference. Crowded on weekends. Halal: nothing halal inside the scenic zone; Tongxiang town has Lanzhou noodle shops. Carry lunch and dates, and expect a late dinner back on Exotic Street. If you only have one long day, compare Hangzhou’s route and restaurant options with the full Wuzhen journey before booking.

FAQ

Questions visitors ask

Can I do Hangzhou as a day trip from Yiwu?

Yes: visitors report 40–70 minutes each way by high-speed train from Yiwu Railway Station, with frequent departures; book the return in advance on busy days. The Hangzhou section points to halal-search areas; confirm your chosen restaurant separately.

How far is Wuzhen from Yiwu?

About two to two and a half hours by train to Tongxiang plus bus or taxi, or about 195 km by road; it is a long but feasible day, and an overnight is better.

Which day trip is easiest without a car?

Hengdian — one metro line from the International Trade City stop, about 44 minutes according to visitors, no booking needed.

Is there halal food on these trips?

The Hangzhou section points to halal-search areas, but confirm a specific restaurant before travelling. We have not verified halal kitchens for the other destinations on this page. Arrange meals in advance or carry suitable food.

Spotted a change (price, closure, halal status)? Report it — a local goes to check.
