7 Yiwu Hotel Scams & Surprises a Local Warns You About

3min read
In one sentence

Few of these are scams in the criminal sense; most are surprises that cost foreign buyers money and sleep because nobody explained the local rules. Here is how to spot each one and what to say.

  1. Room does not match the photos

Ask, in writing, for the room type on the booking and a window.

  2. Cash-only deposit

Common and legitimate. Ask the amount when booking; carry RMB. Get a receipt (押金收据, yājīn shōujù).

  3. Foreign card declined

Many desks have no foreign-card terminal. Ask before arrival, or set up Alipay for foreigners; details in the First-Timer Kit.

  4. "No foreigners"

Some smaller hotels are not licensed to register foreign guests. Booking sites do not always warn you. We flag hotels that turned foreigners away.

  5. No fapiao

If your company needs an official invoice, ask for 发票 (fāpiào) at check-in, not check-out.

  6. Nothing halal nearby, breakfast not halal

Check our hotel tables for 'halal downstairs' before booking; skip the buffet and use the halal breakfast page.

  7. "Hotel price" taxi from the airport

Insist on the meter or use Didi; the benchmark fare is on the airport page.

What happened to other visitors

From public posts

Four complaints that repeat in visitor posts

A hotel that turned into a ‘chassis slaughterhouse’ at night

Public posts about one mid-range hotel describe all-night noise; ask for a room away from the road and the lifts.

The pool that never opened

Even at an international brand, visitors arrived to find the pool closed; confirm by message before you book for it.

Room like a steamer

A banquet hotel's guest reported an overheated room with no relief; test the air-conditioning immediately.

Wanted a room, got a wedding

Several hotels near the market are wedding and banquet venues at weekends; expect lobbies full of guests and noise until late.

Reader-submitted cases (anonymised) appear here once submitted and verified; the cases above are paraphrased from public posts and name no hotel until we have checked.

Booked on Ctrip: queen room ¥182 a night including two breakfasts and a coffee, plus car washing; a decent breakfast selection.

Overall it looked clean and the service was good; the only shortcoming was the soundproofing — a little weak.

Outside Yiwu railway station the taxi queue is very, very long!

Ride-hailing is less than half the price of a taxi, but on arrival at Yiwu station we couldn't get a ride-hail car.

FAQ

Questions visitors ask

Do Yiwu hotels take foreigners?

Most mid-range and international hotels do; some budget hotels are not licensed to register foreign guests. We flag those that turned readers away.

Why did the hotel ask for a cash deposit?

It is standard practice in China; the deposit is returned at check-out. Ask for a receipt.

Can I get a fapiao?

Yes at most hotels; ask at check-in and give your company name in Chinese if you have it.

Spotted a change (price, closure, halal status)? Report it — a local goes to check.
